Akash Network Votes to Migrate from Cosmos to Solana
Akash Network has approved a significant governance proposal that will see its sovereign Cosmos chain decommissioned and its native token, AKT, relaunched as an SPL token on the Solana blockchain.
Early results from Governance Proposal #346 indicated overwhelming support, with approximately 98% of voters in favor. This decision is consequential, as it signifies a complete migration rather than a bridge or secondary deployment. Akash intends to retire its existing chain entirely, and token holders have been informed that there will be no option to revert the change.
The Akash core team submitted Proposal #346 on October 26, 2026, to its Cosmos-based akashnet-2 chain. The voting period concluded on November 2, 2026.
Under the approved plan, AKT will be converted to an SPL token at a 1:1 ratio. The total supply of AKT will remain unchanged, and its six decimal places will be preserved. The conversion process will utilize a one-way portal, which is expected to remain accessible for two years. This extended timeframe is designed to provide holders who may move more slowly with ample opportunity to complete the migration.
The portal will not be immediately available. Audits of the token and the portal infrastructure are anticipated to take approximately two to three weeks following the proposal’s approval. The migration process will commence only after these audits are successfully completed. Once AKT tokens are transferred to Solana, the current proposal does not offer any mechanism for reversal.
The migration of the AKT token is one aspect of the transition; the relocation of Akash’s actual marketplace is a separate undertaking that will require its own governance vote. This subsequent vote is scheduled to occur after further audits and system rehearsals.
When the marketplace cutover eventually takes place, existing workloads operating on the old chain are expected to continue functioning for a period of 90 days. Following this grace period, the legacy chain will be permanently halted.
The estimated daily network fees for the marketplace on Solana are projected to be around 0.075 SOL. Meanwhile, median transaction fees on Solana are anticipated to be approximately $0.001.
Akash Network first indicated its intention to deprecate its sovereign chain in October 2025. This was followed by an open request for proposals in December 2025, during which the project evaluated potential destinations. The selection process concluded in August 2026, with Solana emerging as the chosen platform.
A key factor influencing this decision is the alignment with Solana’s ecosystem, which features a significant concentration of DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) projects. These networks leverage tokens to coordinate real-world resources, a sector that Akash aims to integrate with more closely.
For AKT holders, the migration process will involve moving their tokens once audits are finalized and the portal is operational. The two-year window offers flexibility without making the transition indefinite.
Market analysis supporting the move suggests that transitioning to Solana could provide access to the chain’s substantial liquidity and active user base. This, in turn, is expected to boost demand for AKT within a broader and more dynamic ecosystem.
The most significant remaining uncertainty pertains to the marketplace cutover. While the token migration is largely a technical implementation involving audited systems, the marketplace relocation hinges on a future governance vote, additional audits, and successful rehearsals. The 90-day overlap for existing workloads is intended to serve as a crucial safety net during this transition.
