Bitcoin Reclaims Key Level as Whales Position for FOMC Decision
The world’s leading cryptocurrency by market capitalization has seen a notable rebound, climbing 2% in the past 24 hours and briefly touching the $81,000 mark. Analysts are suggesting the potential for a more significant short-term price surge, with the recent actions of a prominent “whale” investor lending credence to a bullish outlook.
Technical Indicators Signal Strength
Several hours ago, X user Sweep observed that Bitcoin had successfully reclaimed its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA), a development bolstered by robust spot demand. This technical indicator suggests that buyers are regaining dominance in the market, with Sweep characterizing it as “the first major sign of strength.”
Supply Shock Anticipated
Further bolstering the bullish narrative, Sweep highlighted a substantial outflow of Bitcoin from exchanges. Over the past 24 hours, more than $1 billion worth of the cryptocurrency was withdrawn into self-custody wallets. Sweep posited that this trend points towards an impending “supply shock.”
FOMC Meeting Looms Large
The market’s attention is now firmly fixed on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for today, October 28. This event is widely expected to be a key catalyst for volatility and could offer crucial insights into Bitcoin’s next price trajectory. While experts anticipate the U.S. central bank will maintain current interest rates, any deviation from this projection could trigger significant market turbulence.
Whale Positions Fuel Speculation
In anticipation of the FOMC announcement, the positioning of large investors, or “whales,” is under scrutiny. Max Crypto reported that a single, unidentified investor has opened a substantial $72.1 million long position on Bitcoin, utilizing 30x leverage. This aggressive move has ignited speculation that the investor may possess non-public information, given that whales are often perceived as highly sophisticated market participants with greater resources than average retail traders. However, it is important to note that such a position does not guarantee a subsequent price increase for Bitcoin.
Cautionary Notes Amidst Optimism
Conversely, some analysts are cautioning that the FOMC meeting could precede a Bitcoin price correction. Ali Martinez, for instance, recently pointed out that Bitcoin’s initial reaction to past Federal Reserve interest rate adjustments has often been muted, with clearer trends typically emerging within the subsequent 24 hours and frequently extending for at least a week.
Martinez cited several factors warranting caution ahead of the upcoming meeting. Firstly, he noted that Bitcoin whales have recently realized approximately $156 million in profits, potentially increasing selling pressure. Secondly, Martinez revealed that these investors’ total holdings have decreased by 8,162 units in the last 24 hours, suggesting a reduction in exposure prior to the event. Finally, the analyst pointed to the Coinbase Premium index, which has fallen to around -0.17, one of its lowest readings since September.
“A negative premium means Bitcoin is trading cheaper on Coinbase than on Binance, suggesting weaker relative demand from US investors,” Martinez explained.
Key Price Levels to Watch
Martinez concluded that crucial support for Bitcoin lies near the $81,000 level, where a significant volume of trades previously occurred. He warned that a breach of this level could lead to a price drop as low as $67,000.
“To turn bullish, Bitcoin needs to clear $84,500, where roughly 620,000 BTC traded. Above that, the next levels I’m watching are $92,000 and $104,000,” he added.
