Crypto Prediction Markets Hit Record $2.7 Billion Weekly Volume Driven by Bitcoin Bets

Crypto-related prediction market volume on platforms Kalshi and Polymarket surged to a record $2.7 billion in a single week, with bets on Bitcoin’s price movements accounting for the vast majority of the activity. This unprecedented figure positions cryptocurrency as the second most traded category on both exchanges, trailing only sports betting.

The record was set in mid-October 2026, reflecting the total notional value of crypto-related event contracts traded across Kalshi and Polymarket within that week.

High-Frequency Products Fueling the Surge

The dramatic increase in volume is largely attributed to a new wave of high-frequency trading products. A standout among these is Kalshi’s 15-minute up/down contract on Bitcoin, which alone generated over $2 billion in a single week, forming the bulk of the combined crypto total.

Polymarket also contributed significantly, primarily through its own short-duration crypto markets. The platform’s U.S. operations reported approximately $92 million to $101 million in 15-minute Bitcoin volume during its first full week of activity.

Broader Boom for Kalshi

These crypto figures are part of a larger expansion for Kalshi, a regulated U.S. prediction market exchange that established multiple weekly records throughout October. The platform’s total contract volume peaked during the week of October 5 to 11, reaching $19.03 billion across all categories. Daily trading activity also saw a substantial rise, with Kalshi’s daily contract volume consistently ranging between $3.9 billion and $4.4 billion during the month.

Shifting Engagement with Bitcoin

The growth in prediction markets occurs against a backdrop of declining spot trading volumes in the broader cryptocurrency market. Major players like Coinbase are increasingly venturing into prediction markets, seeking to capture user engagement that traditional buy-and-sell trading may no longer provide at the same pace.

The surge in short-duration event contracts suggests a notable shift in how individuals are engaging with Bitcoin. The record volumes indicate a strong appetite for rapid, speculative exposure to price fluctuations, rather than a focus on long-term asset ownership. These 15-minute contracts reward quick decision-making and effectively allow traders to express views on volatility in very short timeframes.

For the platforms involved, these numbers offer validation of their current strategies. Kalshi has proven its ability to generate billions in weekly volume through crypto contracts, while Polymarket’s U.S. arm has demonstrated its capacity to attract substantial early interest. The entry of major entities like Coinbase into this space further suggests that established players perceive significant demand to warrant such an investment.
