Ripple Prime Positions Itself as Key Player in Leveraged ETF Financing
Ripple, the cryptocurrency payment firm, is significantly expanding its presence on Wall Street, with its Ripple Prime division emerging as a prominent provider of swap financing for leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This strategic move capitalizes on the increasing demand for leveraged funds, opening up a new revenue stream for Ripple in a market traditionally dominated by major financial institutions.
The company’s acquisition of prime brokerage firm Hidden Road last year has been instrumental in building this new source of fee income. Leveraged ETFs utilize swaps to gain amplified exposure to an asset without the need for direct, full ownership. Ripple Prime facilitates these complex trades by providing the necessary financing, thereby earning fees for its services.
The market for leveraged ETFs is substantial, with the U.S. alone hosting 593 such funds boasting over $256 billion in assets under management, including 426 funds focused on individual stocks. ETF expert Nate Geraci has recognized Ripple’s growing influence, describing the company as a “serious player in providing swap financing to leveraged ETFs.”
Geraci highlighted the explosive growth of leveraged and highly concentrated ETFs, which depend on swaps for exposure, attracting new counterparties like Ripple into the ecosystem. He noted that this can be a lucrative business for well-positioned entities.
New Opportunities Emerge with Crypto ETPs
A specific example illustrating Ripple’s involvement is the Tradr 2X Long SNDK Daily ETF, designed to mirror twice the daily price movements of SanDisk stock. This fund reportedly pays Ripple an annualized financing rate of approximately 8%, calculated as the overnight bank funding rate plus four percentage points. This financing cost is distinct from the ETF’s standard management fees.
Noel Kimmel, President of Ripple Prime, has indicated that this segment of the business is becoming increasingly vital for the company. “It’s definitely a growing and meaningful part of our business,” Kimmel stated.
The timing of Ripple’s expansion is particularly significant for the cryptocurrency markets. The recent debut of the first 3X leveraged Bitcoin and Ether ETPs on Cboe BZX, following SEC approval, presents another substantial financing opportunity for Ripple Prime. These innovative products leverage CME futures and swaps rather than directly holding the underlying cryptocurrencies.
Given their leveraged nature, these Bitcoin and Ether ETPs require consistent financing, collateral management, and regular rebalancing. Ripple Prime is well-positioned to earn fees by providing these essential services to these new crypto-linked products.
Diversifying Beyond ETFs
Ripple Prime’s ambitions extend beyond the ETF market. On October 6th, Brevan Howard, a prominent asset manager overseeing approximately $35 billion, announced an agreement to utilize Ripple Prime for its brokerage, clearing, and financing needs.
To support its ambitious growth trajectory, Ripple Prime has secured over $1 billion in regulatory net capital and successfully raised $275 million through a senior debt offering. However, Ripple has not yet disclosed the specific revenue generated from leveraged ETF financing or the extent to which its operations involve XRP or the XRP Ledger.
