Ripple Expands Robinhood Partnership, Integrating Stablecoin RLUSD into Brokerage Infrastructure

NEW YORK – At its Swell 2026 conference in New York, Ripple announced a significant expansion of its partnership with Robinhood, bringing its stablecoin, RLUSD, directly into the brokerage’s retail and institutional operations. The integration spans Robinhood Chain, Bitstamp, and the Robinhood App, with Robinhood also adopting Ripple Treasury for its global cash management. This move propels Ripple’s stablecoin beyond exchange listings and into the core infrastructure of a major brokerage firm.

A Shift in Stablecoin Strategy

The stablecoin landscape is undergoing a transformation, with Ripple pivoting from simply adding trading pairs to embedding its stablecoin within established financial flows. The expanded collaboration with Robinhood, unveiled at the Swell 2026 conference, will see RLUSD integrated across both Robinhood’s retail and institutional business lines, encompassing treasury management, lending, and trading services. For a company that began with cross-border payments, this represents a critical step in integrating stablecoins into the daily operations of a brokerage.

According to the joint announcement, RLUSD is already live on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp by Robinhood, with its rollout within the Robinhood App slated for “later this year.” On the institutional side, Robinhood plans to utilize RLUSD for settlement on the XRP Ledger, effectively building its settlement layer directly onto Ripple’s proprietary chain. This phased approach, starting with the chain and professional trading platforms before reaching the retail app, is unusual and likely reflects differences in compliance costs and product review processes. Users on blockchain networks and professional trading platforms are generally more familiar with stablecoins, requiring a narrower scope of review, whereas integrating into a retail app involves a significantly larger undertaking concerning wallet custody, disclosures, and customer support.

Deep Integration into Robinhood’s Operations

The most significant aspect of the partnership lies in the backend. Robinhood will leverage Ripple Treasury to manage its global cash and liquidity, covering payment processing, cash flow forecasting, and intercompany fund scheduling. This signifies a collaboration that extends beyond customers being able to purchase RLUSD; it involves migrating Robinhood’s own financial operations onto Ripple’s systems, which, if successful, would create a much higher switching cost than a simple listing agreement.

Another key component is Ripple Prime. This service, which already provides financing to Bitstamp by Robinhood, is also planning to launch perpetual futures trading on the exchange later this year. The convergence of stablecoins, financing, and derivatives aims to keep Robinhood’s institutional clients within a unified collateral and settlement system.

Market Reach and Strategic Positioning

RLUSD, launched in December 2024, currently boasts a market capitalization of $2.57 billion, with nearly $1 billion issued on the XRP Ledger. Data from DeFiLlama indicates that the XRP Ledger accounts for approximately 40% of its total supply, with the remaining 60% distributed across other chains. The distribution power, however, comes from Robinhood’s extensive user base: as of August this year, Robinhood had 28.6 million funded customer accounts globally, a reach that RLUSD previously lacked.

When these figures are considered together, the strategic logic becomes clear: a stablecoin with a $2.57 billion market cap meeting 28.6 million brokerage accounts represents a classic supply-meets-distribution scenario. The competition in the stablecoin market is no longer about who has the most transparent reserves, but rather about who can be integrated into a user’s trading workflow. This is why issuers have increasingly sought partnerships with payment companies, brokerages, and wallets over the past year, rather than continuing to vie for listings on exchanges.

Broader Ecosystem Expansion

The Robinhood announcement was not the only significant development from Ripple on the day. The company also revealed an expanded partnership with BNY Mellon, whose digital asset custody platform will now support XRP and RLUSD. The two entities plan to enable BNY Mellon clients to directly mint and redeem RLUSD, while also increasing support for tokenized assets on the XRP Ledger. Separately, Ripple has partnered with working capital platform C2FO to move Instant Pay’s financing and settlement onto the XRP Ledger, denominated in RLUSD. This will allow suppliers to receive funds for approved invoices within seconds, bypassing the days-long traditional banking processes. C2FO indicated that the service is currently in testing and is slated for a controlled launch by year-end, with the first RLUSD transactions on the XRP Ledger to be completed then.

A Coordinated Regulatory and Business Push

The timing of these announcements is not coincidental. Just the day prior, Ripple received final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national trust bank. This bank will be responsible for managing the reserves backing RLUSD and providing digital asset custody, while its development operations will remain with its existing New York-regulated subsidiary. This means Ripple now simultaneously holds a banking license, a Wall Street custody partner, trade finance use cases, and retail distribution channels – four critical components aligning within the same month.

For the stablecoin arena, the significance of this integrated strategy lies in its approach to building “institutional trust.” Ripple has prioritized establishing regulatory standing (trust bank), asset safeguarding (BNY Mellon), and real-world transaction scenarios (C2FO’s accounts payable, Robinhood’s trading and settlement) before pushing the token to retail users. This contrasts with strategies focused solely on market share through high-interest subsidies, which often struggle with retention once subsidies are withdrawn. For businesses, particularly in cross-border trade, solutions like Ripple Treasury, which integrate cash flow forecasting and multi-currency scheduling with stablecoins, address common pain points.

Key Observations for the Future

Three key areas warrant attention moving forward. First, the timing and actual utility of RLUSD’s launch within the Robinhood App are crucial. If it merely becomes another tradable asset, its impact on market capitalization will be limited. However, if it can be directly used for payments or as collateral, its significance will be far greater. Second, the successful completion of C2FO’s initial RLUSD transactions by year-end will serve as a direct validation of stablecoins potentially replacing certain banking settlement functions. Third, whether the proportion of RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger increases due to institutional settlement demand will be a more telling indicator of Ripple’s own chain’s actual usage than the total market capitalization of RLUSD itself.
