Bitcoin Tumbles Below $84,000 as Leveraged Liquidations Surge

Bitcoin’s price has fallen below the $84,000 mark, a move that has triggered significant liquidations across the cryptocurrency market, totaling $812.95 million. This downturn coincides with a notable shift in trading dynamics, particularly among U.S. institutional investors.

U.S. Institutions Signal Selling Pressure

Data indicates that U.S. institutions are offloading Bitcoin at a faster pace than traders on Binance. The Coinbase Premium Index, a metric that tracks the price difference between Bitcoin on Coinbase and Binance, has remained consistently negative for several days. This suggests that Bitcoin is trading at a lower price on Coinbase, a platform heavily utilized by U.S. professional investors, compared to Binance. The persistent negative premium points to weakening institutional demand.

The hourly, volume-weighted Coinbase Premium, as tracked by CryptoQuant, has largely stayed in negative territory since mid-September. The index saw a further decline after October 7, reaching approximately -0.0012 to -0.0013 on October 12. This trend amplifies concerns about selling pressure originating from the U.S. market, particularly ahead of the release of key economic data.

Adding to the bearish sentiment, U.S. spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) experienced net outflows of $65.4 million on October 12. Notably, all of these outflows were attributed to BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF.

Inflation and Interest Rate Worries Mount

The current selling pressure is occurring against a backdrop of rising global bond yields and growing inflation concerns. The upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September is anticipated to show headline inflation climbing to 3.7%, further fueling anxieties about the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy. Investors are also closely monitoring the Producer Price Index (PPI) report for indications of increasing business costs.

Simultaneously, the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) has surpassed the 102 level, reaching its highest point since April 2025. A strengthening dollar and elevated borrowing costs typically make riskier assets like Bitcoin less appealing to investors.

Exchange Reserves Remain Stable

Despite the recent price drop and selling pressure, data from CryptoQuant reveals that Bitcoin exchange reserves are holding steady, remaining near 2.67 million BTC. These reserves saw a slight decrease from approximately 2.72 million BTC in late September to 2.67 million BTC in early October. This indicates that a smaller quantity of Bitcoin is readily available on exchanges for immediate sale.

Technical Outlook: $84,000 as a Key Level

From a technical perspective, cryptocurrency analyst Ali Martinez has identified $84,000 as a critical level to watch. According to his analysis, Bitcoin’s current setup bears resemblance to a previous rebound scenario. In that instance, a move above the 50-period simple moving average (SMA) on the four-hour chart served as a confirmation of a rally. Martinez suggests that a sustained four-hour close above $84,000 could pave the way for Bitcoin to potentially advance towards the $93,000 mark.
