S&P Global Unveils Risk Framework for Digital Asset Lending Market

S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new risk assessment framework designed for the burgeoning digital asset lending market, a sector that has seen its deposit base surge to $10 billion. The framework, named Vault Risk Assessment (VRA), aims to provide investors with a clearer understanding of potential risks associated with these on-chain lending products.

New Framework Addresses Rapid Market Growth

The digital asset lending market has experienced significant expansion, with deposits in on-chain lending products climbing from $1.5 billion in September 2024 to a record $10 billion, marking a nearly sevenfold increase in just two years. This rapid growth has underscored the need for standardized risk evaluation tools.

The VRA, launched on October 5, 2026, assigns a score to each digital asset lending vault based on its perceived risk level. The highest rating, AAA(v), signifies the lowest relative risk of investor impairment, while lower scores indicate a greater potential for loss.

Evaluating Risk in Digital Asset Vaults

S&P Global explained that digital asset vaults can function similarly to managed fixed-income funds. Their operational strategies can be executed automatically via smart contracts or overseen by human managers.

Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings, emphasized the growing importance of independent risk assessments as digital assets become more integrated into traditional finance. “As digital assets continue to institutionalize, the demand for independent risk assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralized innovation is paramount,” he stated.

The VRA’s scoring methodology considers six critical areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. These factors are aggregated to determine a letter-based risk score.

Addressing Information Gaps in DeFi

James Wiemken, executive managing director and head of Global Ratings Service, highlighted that the VRA addresses a significant gap in the complex decentralized finance (DeFi) market, particularly concerning the varied ways projects disclose information.

The framework’s introduction coincides with the substantial market expansion, with deposits in on-chain lending vaults, including those utilizing protocols like Morpho and Euler, growing from $1.5 billion to $10 billion over the past two years. These vaults enable users to consolidate capital for automated lending strategies. S&P Global indicated that it plans to publish individual Vault Risk Assessments in subsequent announcements.
