Switzerland Approves First Retail Bitcoin ETF
Switzerland’s financial regulator has given the green light to the country’s first exchange-traded fund (ETF) that directly invests in Bitcoin and is accessible to retail investors. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) announced the approval on Tuesday, citing a “growing interest” in cryptocurrency investments, particularly Bitcoin.
While FINMA did not name specific fund providers, it confirmed that multiple companies have submitted or announced applications for Bitcoin ETFs. This development marks a significant regulatory milestone for the launch of Switzerland’s first Bitcoin ETF aimed at the broader public. A launch date for the ETF has not yet been specified.
The approval follows a trend of increasing demand for cryptocurrency investments. In August 2025, the SIX Swiss Exchange announced that iShares would begin trading a Bitcoin exchange-traded product. This product is fully backed by Bitcoin held in cold storage by Coinbase Custody International Limited.
This latest approval builds on FINMA’s previous actions in the digital asset space. In 2021, the regulator authorized a fund for qualified investors that primarily invested in a basket of cryptocurrencies. At that time, FINMA granted an exemption from standard risk-diversification requirements, citing Bitcoin’s “long trading history and a particularly high trading volume” compared to other digital assets.
However, FINMA reiterated that Bitcoin investments carry inherent market risks, including the potential for significant capital loss due to the high volatility of cryptocurrencies.
Switzerland has established itself as a crypto-friendly nation within Europe. In 2023, the city of Lugano made headlines by adopting Bitcoin and Tether USDt (USDT) for all municipal fees, becoming one of the first city administrations globally to do so.
